The Newham College Shining Stars Awards Ceremony took place on Thursday 30th June 2016, at the College’s East Ham campus. This celebratory occasion, is held every year in recognition of the exceptional achievements that Newham College’s best students accomplish.
Hundreds of guests, ranging from local employers to members of the press, attended together with industry leaders, Newham Borough Councillors, celebrity speakers and of course, nominees and their guests. This year’s event was co-hosted by Tessa Sanderson CBE and special guests included Lord Kamlesh Patel from the England Cricket Board and the legendary England cricketer, now Director of England Cricket, Andrew Strauss OBE, who presented special awards to the College’s cricket team, recent winners of the Association of Colleges national cricket championship.
Students achieving at every level were encouraged by motivational messages and news of their great achievements. Teachers were also praised for supporting the success of outstanding students. There were over fifty nominees for the sixteen awards presented on the night and although only one winner was announced for each award, every nominee received a certificate to mark their achievements. The accolades ranged from Student of the Year to Outstanding Progress to Apprentice of the Year.
All the awards were sponsored by businesses and organisations including Aspers Group Ltd, Gateway Qualifications, Goldline Car Services, JLL Ltd, Maze 8 Recruitment, Café Football, London Borough of Newham, The Newham Recorder and Capita Total Hospitality Training. The support which they provided resulted in £50,050 being raised for the College’s chosen charity, the Learning Revolution Trust. This money will help remove financial barriers to education faced by many east London students.
Martin Cumella, Chair of the Learning Revolution Trust says “Many of the nominees and winning students who received awards have overcome huge challenges to get this far. They all deserve extraordinary credit for the extent of their achievements. We’re here to ensure that many more people from Newham and east London are not denied the same chance to access educational opportunities that can change lives completely.”
Newham College Principal and Chief Executive Di Gowland said “We are incredibly proud of all our students and tonight’s awards ceremony gives us the chance to reward the very best. These students are the hardest-working, most dedicated and promising in the whole of Newham College. We are incredibly proud of them and we wish them the very best as they move forward to the next stage of their education or career.”
